The top 5 things about going back to Uni after the summer break.

The summer holidays can feel long, especially if you are a fresher starting your university life in Lancaster for the first time. If you have spent the summer travelling abroad, interning at your dream company or even working a horrible summer job, whatever year you are in, the 22/23 academic year has a lot of fun in store for you!

  1. Freshers week

Even if you’re not a fresher, you can still enjoy freshers week. From SU-hosted club nights to freshers fairs and free pizza, if you’re an extrovert or an introvert there is always something for everyone.

Our favourite part of freshers week is the clubs and society days (and trials!), each year you have a renewed opportunity to try out something new and learn a new skill! This means that you can have a go at the thing you’ve always wanted to try and be the best version of yourself, be that; horse riding-you, chess playing-you or even learnt-Spanish-for-fun-you.

2. The reading list

“What?”, we hear you cry! “Not the reading list!”. Hear us out on this one…

Last year, you might have let the reading list slip from your mind and then panic read just before that essay/presentation/group assignment was due. But not this year! This brand new academic year gives you the chance to reset and get ahead of your reading. Trust us, it’ll be worth it.

3. Friends

Oh, how we have missed our friends.

Home friends are great, you have a shared history and sure, you had a lot of fun together this summer. But there is no friend like a “we tried to boil pasta and burnt it” friend, or a “we hate THAT Professor’s lectures” friend, or even “we blew our student loan and lived off super noodles for a month” friend. Friends that you met living in your student flat at Lancaster University have shared life experiences with you that are all part of finding your freedom - there truly is no substitute.

4. Your student loan

There is no better feeling than your student loan FINALLY reaching your bank account. Whilst it is exciting to see all of that money at once, it is essential that you develop budgeting skills and make sure that you have enough money to cover food and rent, before you hit the shops!

5. Bailrigg Student Living

If you’ve moved in with us this year you are going to love the onsite cinema room and gym. There is nothing better than not having to commute to the gym on a cold winter’s evening (trust us, we have tried it). Instead, just slip downstairs for a workout before heading back to your very own private en suite for a shower. And after that, who knows, you might even want to head to the cinema room and watch the new Top Gun film!
