5 Things to Do During Your First Two Weeks at Bailrigg
By Finty Royle
As we look forward to welcoming you to Bailrigg student living, we have pulled together the 5 “must do” things to truly immerse yourself in Lancaster life.
· Explore Lancaster City Centre
Familiarise yourself with your new hometown. Plan to go and check out the city centre with your new housemates from your Lancaster student housing. Where’s the best place for a coffee with friends? Which is the best park? Where can you go to relax when things get stressful? See the sights of the city and its surroundings with a visit to Williamson park or a guided tour of the Castle. Suss out the best places to eat, drink and shop. If you want to shop on a budget and stretch your student loan, you will want to find out where you’re going to do your weekly shop. The question is – Is it cheaper to get the free bus to Sainsbury’s on a Wednesday and shop there or trek to ASDA or ALDI in Morecambe? It’s up to you to find out.
· Explore The University
Familiarise yourself with the University campus and the places you’ll be based for the next few years. Plan your route from your Lancaster student accommodation to the university campus. You may think that your room will serve as the best study space, but the library is quiet and full of resources. So, give it a visit and bagsy your favourite spot. Lancaster Uni has a state of the art sports centre only a stone’s throw away from your new accommodation so if you want to stay fit during your first term, consider getting a membership in the first few weeks.
· Make Yourself at Home
Your Lancaster student housing will be your home away from home so adding a personal touch to your new room will make it more homely. Maybe add some wall art to reflect your personality or a few photos to remind you of people back home. Perhaps invest in a houseplant as a replacement pet. Add some cushions or blankets for the comfort factor. The possibilities are endless! (Just remember not to mark the walls!)
· Find a part time job
If you feel like you need to supplement your student loan, it may be worth looking for a part-time job. Not only will you be able to earn some money, but you’ll also be able to boost your CV, gain valuable work experience and meet new people. Check out the university Employment and Recruitment Serviceas it advertises part-time and temporary positions at the University and in its surroundings. Juggling studying and work won’t be easy but if you are organised and get into a good routine then it will be invaluable.
· Register with your local doctor
Don’t wait until you are ill to register with your local doctor. Find your local GP using the NHS choices website.
If you fancy the short train ride to Blackpool, the Blackpool illuminations are on from the 3rd of September and from the 10th of September you can take the Famous Blackpool Heritage Ghost Tram Tour.
