Clearing 2021 - What it is and what to expect

Still need a place at university after results day. We know how nerve-racking results day is and how upsetting it is if you don’t get a place. Fortunately, if you didn’t get the grades but still really want to go to university, you can do so through clearing.

What is clearing?

Clearing is a process that allows universities to fill any remaining places they have on courses and allows students to find a different course if they weren’t accepted by their firm or insurance choices. Last year more than 70,000 students secured a place at university through clearing, so you’re not alone. Clearing is available from 5th July to 19th October, and you can apply if:

  • You applied after 30th June

  • You didn’t receive any offers (or any offers you wanted to accept)

  • You didn’t meet the conditions of your offer

How do you apply?

To start, UCAS is now also offering a service called clearing plus which matches courses to you based on your application, but it is still recommended that you search for courses yourself too. This can be easily done through searching the UCAS website, you can also search for available courses through specific university websites.

It’s been recommended that students apply for clearing within days rather than weeks to secure their place as this year universities have been met with very high demand. Don’t forget you will need to call the universities clearing line and have all your information ready so you can secure your place quickly, which includes:

  • UCAS ID

  • Clearing number

  • Personal Statement

  • Results

  • Any questions

If a university offers you a place through clearing the offer will show on your UCAS application, and you will have confirmed your place at this university. If you confirm and change your mind you will have to call the university and ask if they can remove your offer.

But clearing is working slightly differently this year. Less Universities are taking part in clearing this year and many aren’t offering places on all their courses. Fortunately, at Lancaster university, clearing is available on all courses with spaces, medicine is the only course this year that Lancaster will not be offering clearing spaces for due to high demand.

The next step once accepting a place through clearing is looking for accommodation! Accommodation is one of the most important parts of university and there are many options if you’re looking for Lancaster student housing. If you accept a place through clearing at Lancaster university then you will be guaranteed Lancaster student housing in their on-campus accommodation.

Our Lancaster student accommodation Bailrigg student living is very close to Lancaster’s Health innovation campus, only a 5-minute walk away which is perfect if you want to apply through clearing for a course such as BSc (Hons) sport and exercise science which still has places available and is studied on the health innovation campus.

If you’re looking for student accommodation in Lancaster then sadly we are fully booked at Bailrigg this year but feel free to send any enquiries on our website if you want to book for the academic year 2022 and we’ll be happy to help.
